When is it necessary for a highly skilled migrant to leave the Netherlands?

For each situation, it depends on when an expat has to leave the Netherlands. Below is an overview of the most common reasons:

  • When the legal residence of the highly skilled migrant has ended, he/she must leave the Netherlands as soon as possible;
  • In case of voluntary departure or upon termination of the permit, the expat must leave the country when the residence permit expires (with a maximum of 3 months);
  • When an application is rejected or the residence permit has been withdrawn, he/she must leave within 4 weeks;
  • In exceptional cases the departure period can even be 0 days, so the county must then be left immediately.

In short, it is important to keep an eye on the reason why the expat has to leave so that he/she can leave the Netherlands in time.

When leaving the Netherlands, a number of mandatory administrative actions must be performed. Consider, for example, handing in the residence permit, informing the IND about the change, deregistering with the municipality, etc.

The Relocation Company can assist you with the tailor-made ‘Departure Package’, so that no administrative actions are forgotten. In this case, both the employer (recognized sponsor) and the highly skilled migrant are properly deregistered and you will not be faced with any surprises.
