A new national law makes every adult an organ donor unless you opt out. The law came into effect in the summer of 2020. When the law is fully implemented, everyone who lives in the Netherlands and is registered at the municipality (this includes foreigners) will automatically become an organ donor unless they indicate otherwise.

In the meantime everyone that is not already registered with their preferences regarding organ donation will receive a letter where you can choose one of the four options when it comes to organ donation. The options are:
1. Yes, I would like to become an organ donor;
2. No, I do not want to become an organ donor ;
3. My partner will choose upon my death;
4. Another appointed person may choose upon my death.

If you do not reply to this letter, another one will be sent within six weeks. If, again, you do not respond, you will be automatically registered as an organ donor.
